OtC In the Garden, Palazzo Mazzone Alessi, Caltanissetta

Una riflessione su un giardino privato, hortus conclusus dell’ideatrice della trilogia Sistema Naturae, polmone vivente, luogo sensoriale. Questo luogo viene percepito dall’artista come spazio fisico/aereo, in cui al geotropismo positivo del sistema radicolare sotterraneo corrisponde il geotropismo opposto dell’emissione di ossigeno. Testimoni silenziose del mondo sotterraneo, le radici, connessioni invisibili nella rizosfera, sono anche omaggio ai circuiti sotterranei del sistema minerario del luogo, le solfatare della Fossa di Caltanissetta in triangolo con Enna ed Agrigento. Il Palazzo che ospita i progetti curati da Anna Guillot è stato costruito dagli ingegneri che si occuparono della costruzione della rete ferroviaria che serviva al trasporto dello zolfo.

Un coro di respiri emessi da coni interrati in più punti, coni o inghiottitoi, che ricordano le cosiddette “sinkholes”, voragini, collassi del terreno in più punti di quel territorio in corrispondenza delle miniere ormai dismesse. Una richiesta di ossigeno da parte di quel popolo di “carusi” sacrificati ad una vita paragonata a condizioni da olocausto e spesso soffocati sottoterra.

Dal sottosuolo buio, silenzioso, un vuoto indefinito, e le tracce sonore dei respiri, sovrapposte a tracce di musica sintetizzata digitalmente attraverso dei sensori applicati alle piante del giardino. Una voce ancestrale, del mondo dei morti e del mondo dei vivi.

A reflection on a private garden, the “hortus conclusus” of the creator of the Sistema Naturae trilogy, a living lung and a sensory place. This place is perceived by the artist as a physical/aerial space, in which the opposite geotropism of the oxygen emission corresponds to the positive geotropism of the underground root system. Silent witnesses of the underground world, the roots, invisible connections in the rhizosphere, are also a tribute to the underground circuits of the local mining system, the solfataras of the Fossa di Caltanissetta in a triangle with Enna and Agrigento. The building that houses the projects curated by Anna Guillot was built by the engineers who took care of the construction of the railway network that was used to transport the sulphur. A chorus of breaths emitted by cones buried in several points, cones, or trumpets, which recall the so-called “sinkholes”, chasms, collapses of the ground in several points of that territory in correspondence with the now abandoned mines. A request for oxygen from that people of “carusi” sacrificed to a life compared to holocaust conditions and often suffocated underground.
From the dark, silent subsoil, an indefinite void, and the sound traces of breaths, superimposed on traces of digitally synthesized music through sensors applied to the plants in the garden. An ancestral voice, from the world of the dead and from the world of the living.
